What luxury means on Dal Lake
On Dal Lake a houseboat is graded by its woodwork, its room size and how much of the boat you get to yourself. In the luxury grade the shell and the interiors are almost always deodar and walnut, with hand-carved panelling on the walls and a khatamband ceiling — small pieces of wood fitted together in a geometric pattern without nails — in the drawing room and usually in the bedrooms too. The furniture is carved rather than bought in, the carpets are hand-knotted, and the drawing room is a full sitting room rather than a passage between cabins.
Rooms in this grade are the largest on the lake, typically with a proper double bed, wardrobe space and an attached bathroom with a geyser and running hot water. The front deck is deep enough to hold cane chairs and a table for the whole party, and on most luxury boats it belongs to your booking alone. Meals are cooked to order and served in a separate dining room. This grade suits honeymoon couples, families who want space and privacy, and anyone staying three nights or more who would like the boat to feel like a house rather than a room.

What actually makes a houseboat "luxury" on Dal Lake?
Three things: the quality and extent of the hand-carved walnut and khatamband work, the size of the rooms and their attached bathrooms, and whether the deck and drawing room are private to your booking. Government grading also exists, but on the ground these are the differences you will see and feel.
Are the rooms heated in winter?
Luxury-grade boats are the best equipped for cold weather — thicker wooden walls, heavy carpets and heating arranged in the room. Tell us your travel dates when you enquire and we will confirm exactly what the boat provides before you commit.
Is the deck private?
On most boats in this grade, yes — the front deck and drawing room are held for your party. Where a boat is shared we say so clearly before booking.
How do I get a rate?
