Every houseboat page on the internet lists Wi-Fi, heating, meals and a private bathroom. All four are usually true and all four mean different things on different boats, which is why guests who did their research still arrive surprised.
This is the checklist we actually work through with owners when a guest tells us what matters. Use it to decide which three or four items are non-negotiable for your trip, then send those with your enquiry — a specific requirement gets a specific answer.
In short
- Heating and hot water are the two that most affect comfort, and vary most between boats.
- A private bathroom is standard; its size, pressure and age are not.
- Room position — lake-facing or side — changes the stay more than the category does.
- Meals are usually arranged as a package; confirm what is included before check-in.
- Wi-Fi exists on most boats. Reliable Wi-Fi is a smaller subset.
Heating and hot water
Srinagar is cold for much of the year and genuinely cold from late autumn to early spring. A wooden boat on water loses heat quickly at night, so heating is not a luxury item on this list — it is the first thing to ask about if you are travelling outside the summer months.
Boats heat rooms in different ways: electric heaters, oil-filled radiators, occasionally a traditional bukhari stove in the common room. Ask which, and ask whether it runs all night or is switched off. For hot water, the question is whether it is available on demand or needs to be arranged in advance, and whether it reaches the shower at usable pressure.
Practical tip
Ask it as a scenario, not a feature: "We will be there in late October — how will the bedroom be heated at 2am?" That question cannot be answered with a tick mark.
Bathrooms
Almost every houseboat room now has an attached bathroom, so the presence of one tells you nothing. What varies is size, age, water pressure, whether there is a western or Indian toilet, and whether the shower is a proper enclosure or a fitting over the floor drain.
On budget and standard boats expect compact and functional. On premium and luxury boats the bathroom is usually where the upgrade is most visible. If a good bathroom is high on your list, it is worth naming it as a requirement — it narrows the options quickly and honestly.
Room position and view
This is the facility nobody lists and everybody notices. A houseboat has front rooms that look out over open water, middle rooms that look sideways at the next boat, and back rooms near the kitchen. All three can be described as a room on a houseboat; only one of them is the experience people picture.
Front / lake-facing
- Open water from the window
- Best light and best air
- Closest to the verandah
- Fills first, especially in peak weeks
Middle and rear
- Often larger for the price
- Quieter from passing shikaras
- View may be the neighbouring boat
- Rear rooms sit near the kitchen
Ask for the room position, not the room number. Position is something an owner can confirm; a number means nothing to you.
Meals and the kitchen
Confirm four things: which meals are included in the rate, what happens if you skip one, whether special diets can be handled, and what time the kitchen stops. Most boats will do all of it willingly, but the answers differ, and an assumption here is how guests end up paying for meals twice.
If anyone in your group is vegetarian, vegan or has an allergy, put it in the enquiry rather than mentioning it on arrival. The shopping for your stay is often done before you get there.
Wi-Fi, power and phone signal
Most boats have Wi-Fi. Speed and reliability vary with the mooring and the day, and a boat that streams fine in the morning may not in the evening. If you need to work from the boat, say so — it is a real requirement and some moorings are much better than others.
Mobile signal on the lake is generally usable. Note that prepaid SIMs from outside Jammu and Kashmir do not always work in the region, which catches visitors out every season. Power is reliable more often than not; bring a power bank anyway, and check how many sockets the room has if you travel with several devices.
Facilities checked per boat
Tell us which three facilities matter most
We confirm them with the owner for your dates and only send options that actually meet them. Rates on request, for your stay.
Transfers, access and parking
The shikara transfer is part of the stay on essentially every boat, but who pays for it and whether it is on call all day is worth confirming. If you have a car for the trip, ask where it can be parked near the ghat. If anyone in the group has mobility difficulties, ask which ghat the boat uses and how the boarding works — some are a step, some are a scramble.
How to ask so you get a real answer
- Pick your three non-negotiables. Not ten — three. Heating, a lake-facing room and a private boat, for example.
- Ask each as a situation rather than a feature, so it cannot be answered with yes.
- Ask what is not included in the rate. It is the most useful question on this page.
- Get the answer in writing on WhatsApp, so there is a record before you commit.
When you enquire with us, the facilities you name are the ones we check with owners, and the reply tells you which options meet them and which do not. If a boat cannot do something, we would rather say so before you book than explain it after you arrive.
Facilities — frequently asked
Do all Kashmir houseboats have heating?
Most have heating of some kind, but the type and how long it runs vary. Outside the summer months this is the first thing we confirm with the owner for your dates.
Do houseboats have Wi-Fi?
Most do. Reliability varies by mooring and time of day, so if you need to work from the boat, tell us and we will prioritise moorings where it holds up.
Can I get a room facing the lake?
Ask for a front or lake-facing room specifically. We check room position with the owner, though the specific room always depends on availability for your dates.
Are meals included in the rate?
It varies by boat and by arrangement. We confirm exactly which meals are included with each option we send, so there is no ambiguity at check-in.
