When to come
Best Time to Visit Kashmir
A month-by-month look at weather, visitor numbers, what is open and how a houseboat stay feels at that point in the year.
Kashmir has four real seasons, and they are not variations on a theme — a January trip and a June trip have almost nothing in common. This guide goes through the year month by month, with what the weather does, how busy it gets, what is open, and what a houseboat stay actually feels like at that point in the year.
The short answer
If you want gardens and blossom, come in April or May. If you want warm weather and the lotus beds, come in June or July. If you want colour, clear air and space to yourself, come in October. If you want snow, come in January or February. There is no bad month, only months that suit different trips.
Two things are true in every season. Evenings on the water are colder than the day suggests, and the first week of a month can be quite different from the last. If your dates are fixed, work from the dates rather than from the season.

Month by month
| Month | Weather | Crowds | What is open | On a houseboat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | Deep winter. Snow in the valley, hard frost, short grey days. | Very quiet. | Gulmarg is at its best for snow. Some gardens and high roads closed or restricted. | Cold and extremely still. Heating and a bukhari matter more than the view. |
| February | Cold, with snow still likely and the first hints of the thaw. | Quiet. | Winter sports continue in Gulmarg. Roads can close after heavy snow. | Quiet and atmospheric, with mist on the water most mornings. |
| March | Thaw and blossom. Almond and then cherry. Cold mornings, mild afternoons. | Building through the month. | The tulip garden usually opens late in the month. Gardens reopening. | Fresh and clear, with the lake at its cleanest after winter. |
| April | Spring proper. Mild days, cool nights, occasional rain. | Busy. | Tulip garden at its peak. Mughal gardens in full planting. | One of the best months on a verandah, and one of the first to sell out. |
| May | Warm days, comfortable evenings, green everywhere. | Busy. | Everything open. Good conditions for Pahalgam and Sonamarg. | Long light evenings on the water. |
| June | Warm to hot by day, cool after dark. The escape from the plains. | Very busy. | All roads and passes open. Peak season for day trips. | Warm afternoons, best spent on the deck rather than ashore. |
| July | Warm and humid at times, with rain. Lotus beds in flower. | Very busy. | Everything open. Amarnath yatra season affects traffic and accommodation. | The lotus beds on Dal are at their peak, close to the boats. |
| August | Warm, with some rain. Green and full. | Busy. | Everything open. Saffron fields still green. | Still and warm, with the lotus season tailing off. |
| September | Warm days, cold mornings. The air dries out. | Easing after the middle of the month. | Everything open. Excellent conditions for the high valleys. | Calm water, clear skies and fewer boats. |
| October | Crisp and cold early, bright by day. Chinars turning. | Quiet after mid-month. | Gardens open and at their most colourful. High roads still open. | Cold mornings, gold light, the best month for photography. |
| November | Cold. First snow on the high ground; frost in the city. | Very quiet. | Chinar colour into early November. Some high roads begin to close. | Very quiet and beautiful, but you will want heating in the evening. |
| December | Winter sets in. Snow in the valley from late in the month. | Very quiet, then a New Year peak. | Gulmarg opens for snow. Chillai Kalan begins around the 21st. | Cold and utterly still, with lights on the water at night. |
Spring, March to May
Spring is the season Kashmir is famous for. It starts with bare orchards and ends with everything in leaf. Almond blossom first, then cherry, then the tulip garden below the Zabarwan hills, which opens for a few weeks and draws very large numbers while it lasts. The Mughal gardens are replanted and at their best through April and May.
On the water the lake is clean and cold, the light is soft, and the mornings still need a jacket. This is the most competitive season for houseboats: the good rooms on the good boats go early, particularly around the tulip opening and the long weekends.
Summer, June to August
Summer in Srinagar is what the rest of northern India comes for. Days are warm rather than hot, evenings are pleasant, and the high valleys — Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg — are all easily reached. There is some rain, particularly in July.
The lotus beds on Dal Lake flower through the height of summer, and in many places they come right up to the boats. School holidays make this the busiest stretch of the year for accommodation, so expect the lake to be active from early morning until late.
Autumn, September to November
Autumn is the season people return for. After the middle of September the air dries out and the mornings turn cold; through October the chinars go yellow and then deep red, and the visitor numbers fall away. Saffron is harvested near Pampore late in the season.
For anyone who came to sit on a verandah and look at water, this is the best time of year. Dawn is cold and often misty, the light is long, and the lake is quiet. Take warm clothes for the evening: the temperature drops quickly once the sun is off the water.

Winter, December to February
Winter is the season most visitors skip and some travellers prefer. Snow falls in the valley and heavily in Gulmarg. The coldest stretch, known as Chillai Kalan, runs for about forty days from around 21 December. Days are short, skies are often grey, and there is an extraordinary silence over the lakes.
A houseboat in winter is a specific pleasure: a bukhari burning in the sitting room, kahwa, condensation on the windows and nothing at all moving outside. It is also the season where the boat matters most. Heating, hot water, a sheltered mooring and a short crossing from the ghat are what separate a memorable stay from an uncomfortable one.
Build slack into your plans. Flights into Srinagar and the highway from Jammu can both be disrupted by snow, and the high roads to Gulmarg and Sonamarg are sometimes restricted.
Houseboat stays
We only offer boats that suit your season
Which houseboats are comfortable in January is a different question from which are pleasant in June, and we answer it boat by boat. Send your dates and we will send named boats with rates.
Planning around the season
- Peak weeks book out first. April, the summer school holidays and the New Year period are the tightest. Enquire early for those.
- Weather affects travel more than sightseeing. Allow a buffer day before any onward flight in winter.
- Layers in every season. Even in June you will want something warm after dark on the water.
- Ask what is actually open. High roads, the tulip garden and some gardens are seasonal, so check for your exact dates rather than assuming.
- Rates move with the season. We quote for your dates rather than publishing a price, because the same room is not the same price in January and in April.
